West Tisbury hosted its third annual town picnic at the Agricultural Hall Saturday.
Twins Andrea and Juliet Norse, who graduated from eighth grade at the West Tisbury School this week, were put to work even though it was a Saturday.
“We used to go to Debbie’s day care just up the road, so, well, she’s still the boss” said Andrea.
Debbie is Debbie Magnuson who three years ago saw an opportunity for a community event on the cusp of summer.
“The picnic brings people together, and so I went to the selectmen,” she said. “They approved it and I got a bit of money, but everyone helped out.”
Selectman Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd did his part by handing out free popcorn and hot dogs on a sunny, breezy June day.
While waiting for food, Ann Fielder, former West Tisbury librarian, recalled meeting Mr. Manter as a young boy.
“I remember Skipper when he was tiny, he would come in to the library,” she said. “Oh, I just thought he was so cute!”
“She’s the only person to ever call me cute,” responded Mr. Manter.
Kids of all sizes had plenty to do at the picnic. Vineyard Photo set up an outdoor photo booth. A few steps away, staying true to the Agricultural Society’s roots, a group of sheep enjoyed some shade and attention. Laura Marshard of Sonnyside Rides brought two Percheron draft horses and led carriage rides all afternoon.
“This is Tiny Tim, and this is Tex” she said, perched at the helm of her horse and buggy.
Maggie’s Kitchen Band provided the musical entertainment and it was a true group effort.
“I’m really old, but they let me get up there and strum along,” said retired economics professor Bob Knight. “It’s very nice.”
Marcy Klapper agreed, adding that she though the picnic is hitting its stride.
“This is the most crowded it’s ever been,” she said.
