Now that the hubbub of the Fourth of July is over we can start thinking about the next notable events to come.

There is the bass and bluefish derby, maybe a couple of hurricanes, and then the hauling out of the On Time 3. As soon as the derby ends one of the ferryboats goes out of service for maintenance and Coast Guard inspection. I mention this now with three months notice so that you have time to plan. The derby ends Saturday, Oct. 19. The next day the On Time 3 departs for Vineyard Haven where it gets hauled out of the water.

That leaves the On Time 2 to handle all of the traffic by itself. It is eight feet shorter than its big sister, so often only two pickup trucks will fit aboard at a time. If you or your contractor has plans to get a concrete foundation poured, get tons of gravel to fix a road, bring an excavator over to a job site, demolish a building and load it into dumpsters or any big project that can be done another time, do yourselves and the citizens of Chappaquiddick a favor and avoid doing it during the five and a half weeks between Oct. 19 and Thanksgiving.

The other ferry may be back sooner or may be away longer. It all depends on what we find when it comes out of the water.

The household hazardous waste collection happens on July 20. You can take your old oil paint, gasoline, bug spray and such over to the Edgartown transfer station yourself or you can bring it to the Chappy Community Center between 7 and 8 a.m. We will load your yucky stuff into the Chappy Ferry truck and I will personally deliver it to the brave folks at the collection site.

For 30 years the Chappaquiddick Community Center has brought together old and young, year-round and season Chappaquiddickers. The sociability and activities that the center has provided is wonderful. To ensure the longevity of this institution an endowment fund has been established which will be held by the Permanent Endowment of Martha’s Vineyard (PEMV) for the benefit of the center. Friday night the CCC is hosting a concert featuring the Parker Quartet. They will be performing Beethoven and Szymanowski beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance (on-line or at the center office) and $30 at the door. Considering the expense involved in getting to a concert in the big city, this is a fabulous deal.
