Robert (Bob) Lewis Meade of Edgartown died in Ft. Myers, Fla. on April 19 after a brief illness. He was 89.
The son of George L. Meade and Mary J. (Gately) Meade, Bob was born and raised in Waltham and resided in Boston for many years before dividing his time between Martha’s Vineyard and Ft. Myers.
After graduating from Boston College and Harvard Law School, Bob was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country in the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart. He later chaired the Massachusetts Office of Public Utilities during the tenure of Gov. Francis Sargent. He maintained a private law practice at Hale & Dorr in Boston.
Bob cherished his time on the Island, especially playing golf and hosting friends and family at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs and spending time at his favorite local establishments.
Over the years Bob acquired several local businesses, including the Lampost in Oak Bluffs which flourished as a favorite Island hot spot.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved brothers, Richard J. Meade and David G. Meade.
He is survived by Lois Boudreau, his devoted and caring companion of 45 years, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at Farm Neck on August 23.
