Ladyfest. What can I say about the best Island event of the year?

We thank the Oak Bluffs police department for closing down Circuit avenue to traffic, and the Oak Bluffs selectmen for their help with this event. We thank Rosie Guerin, Kelly Feirtag, Liza Cowen May, the Ritz, JB Blau, the musicians, and all the partygoers who made this a great fundraising event for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services program Connect to End the Violence.

The festival took place Saturday. Female singers and female-led bands provided the music. I heard the early hours were very family friendly, with strollers and children. And, be still my heart, Rosie Guerin’s uncle, Jim Kweskin, my favorite from the jug band days, played at the Island Theatre to raise money for the cause. The totals are being tallied, but this party was even bigger than last year. If you could not attend, you may send your donation to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. Write Ladyfest in the memo. Same time, next year. I’ll see you there.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, I will attend the free vegan dinner at the P.A. Club from 6 to 8 p.m. My buddy, Sam Armstrong from Brooklyn, is behind this event from the Martha’s Vineyard Vegan Society, Inc. R.I.P. Toyota Tundra with the iklean license plate. My truck was a victim of a falling tree during last Wednesday night’s bomb cyclone gale. If you see me hitchhiking, with a vacuum and a cane, please do not hesitate to pick me up.

Martha’s Vineyard Screenprinting on State Road is putting on an open house on Oct. 30 and 31. The event is family-friendly and free. Donations are welcome for the Tisbury fire department. Call 508-693-9592 for more information.

Molly Conole is singing from the American Songbook this weekend at the Old Whaling church. What a delight.

The Crop Walk held last weekend garnered more donations and more walkers than last year. I shall never think of Crop Walk without thinking of Alden Besse and Betty Burton. Please donate if you can.

My dear friend Susan Jones wrote a thoughtful and intelligent letter to this newspaper, published last Friday. I urge you to look it up, read it, and let her information sink in. Susan is a Rennaissance woman and a humanitarian.

Get well wishes to my hard-working cousin, Tom Spiconardi, who is having recurring problems with hs leg. I wish him relief from pain.

I have lost so many good friends recently: Maryfaith Fortunate, a giant of compassion; Henry Mantonona Santos, a man for all seasons and beloved dad of my sisters, Tac Islander and JussJo; and Patrick McEvoy, dad of Annie McEvoy Downing. May they all rest in peace.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Bonnie Travers on Oct. 17; Noel Macy partied hard on Oct. 19; Lori Robinson Fisher, Rozana Pires and Mary Wright-Graves celebrated on Oct. 21; Barbara McMurray claimed Oct. 22; Silvio Joseph Gardella III turns fifteen on Oct. 24; and on Oct. 27, my friend and assistant, Bobbie Jo Sears, takes the cake.
