Who doesn’t marvel about unsolved mysteries? The award-winning screenplay, Rembrandt Has Left the building, co-written by Arnie Reisman and Nat Segaloff, will be discussed at the West Tisbury library at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. I had recently moved to Massachusetts when this famous art heist in Boston occurred in 1979. I’ll see you at the library.
Speaking of mysteries, our own Judith Campbell has finished writing Silent Night, Deadly Night, her second Viridienne Greene mystery. It is available on Kindle and will soon be out in print and paper. I have a tradition of giving out Judy’s books for Christmas. Tried and true, I highly recommend it.
My column is often full of our local artists because that’s what we do best here. Another benefit was held for singer Sabrina Luening on Sunday at the P.A. Club. Local bands played up a storm of great tunes, including Johnny Hoy, Mike Benjamin, Evan Dando, Willy Mason, Rose Guerin, Barbara Dacey, Jemima James and Phil DaRosa. The party was packed and went on from 4 p.m. to last call. This won’t be our last party for this great Island family. Sabrina’s GoFundMe page is still online.
Poetry is high on my list of the arts. Our first Island poet laureate, great writer, great thinker and all around Renaissance man, Lee H. McCormack has a GoFundMe page up in his honor, posted by his many dear friends. Lee has a most important goal to achieve. I hope you look it up and can help out.
As far as helping out goes, Knitworks is holding two, four-hour sessions with free yarn and free lunch provided. The goal is to knit items for our annual Handmade from the Heart fundraiser for Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard. When it comes to knitting I am all thumbs. Please attend and make some hats and scarves for me. Another Island artist, Laurel Redington-Whitaker, has won a Massachusetts Broadcaster Award for the fourth year in a row. If Laurel is weary of walking up to get her prize I promise to stand in for her next year. Betty Burton wants to remind you that Serving Hands will be giving out the Thanksgiving holiday baskets at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Vineyard Haven on Friday, Nov. 22. May you all have a nice holiday. I cannot cook turkey here. Broken Wing won’t allow it.
Wes Stokes has returned from his Uncle Jim Shea’s services in Waterbury, Conn. Jim was a great man and loved playing in the drum corps. Fife and drums, camaraderie and family love ruled the week. Rest in peace.
Evelyn DeBettencourt, a great woman loved by all who knew her, was memorialized on Monday. Her services were at St. Augustine’s. Our condolences to her family and friends.
Get well wishes go out to Shirley Robinson. Shirley is a friend to all but the backbone of Island teens at all times.
The birthday bandwagon pulled along David (Cricket) Willoughby on Nov. 12; Doug Grant claims Nov. 21; and on Nov. 25 Martha Dunham and Nicole Cimeno take the cake. Many happy returns.
