As the clock wound down in regulation of a 0-0 stalemate, senior hockey captain Colby Zarba wrestled the puck away from a scrum of skaters then sent it along the ice to a perfectly posted Logan Araujo by the net. Araujo flicked a shot past the Sandwich goalkeeper and less than 90 seconds later, the Vineyard claimed victory in their season opener by a 1-0 margin.

The Vineyard’s goaltender, Graham Stearns, was lights out in net. The sophomore stopped 28 shots en route to his first shutout of the year and a win for purple and white in the first round of the Jim Gormley Cup at Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne last Thursday.

The second and final round of the Gormley Cup did not bear a positive outcome for the Vineyard as they were outmatched by division two Plymouth North. The Blue Eagles made light work of the Vineyard and coasted to a 10-1 triumph on Saturday. After finishing a string of away games to start the season, the boys will make their home debut this Saturday against Hanover at 5 p.m.

The swim team began their season Saturday in Sandwich at the Cape and Islands League Relay Carnival. While the Vineyard ended the competition in fifth out of eight teams, some of the highlights from the event included captain Gabby Carr qualifying for sectionals in two events, the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke.

The Vineyarders also captured the highest placement in school history at a relay carnival event when the girls 200-meter freestyle relay, composed of Carr, co-captain Eleanor Hyland, Lily Jones and Olympia Hall, an eighth-grader, finished less than a second behind first-place Nantucket with a time 1:55.17.

“It was a great first meet for the team with many best times and good early season swims,” said head coach Jonathan Chatinover. “Seventeen different swimmers were on scoring relays including sixth, seventh and eighth graders.”

Tuesday the swim team hit the road once again and competed against Brockton in their first dual meet of the season. The two squads split, with Brockton’s girls besting the Vineyard’s 81-61 and Martha’s boys edging the Boxers 91-62.

Team captains Ruairi Mullin, Oliver Dorr and Gabby Carr were all double winners. Carr qualified for sectionals in back-to-back meets with her win in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing in 2:08.96. Carr also took first in the 100-meter butterfly finishing in 1:07.29.

Mullin reigned supreme in the distance events, with wins in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing in 2:15.15, and the 500-meter freestyle in 6:07.15. Dorr won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:26.29 and also claimed victory in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing in 1:02.34.

Indoor track began their season Tuesday with a meet against Falmouth at Wheaton College in Norton. In what head coach Joe Schroeder described as a close meet, the girls team snagged a 48-46 win over the Clippers while the boys came up short 54-46.

Girls basketball began their season on the road with a matchup against the Carver Crusaders last Thursday. The Vineyarders lost by a 66-31 margin. Foul weather-induced boat cancellations on Saturday led to the postponement of the girls’ home opener against Cardinal Spellman.

On Tuesday the team made the trip across the sound to play Falmouth in their first league contest of the season. The Clippers defeated the Vineyard 49-21 behind Kayla Thomas’ six three-pointers. Friday afternoon the girls are set to face off against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins in their first home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.

Also on Tuesday, the boys basketball team played their season opener against Falmouth at home. The Vineyarders and Clippers battled back and forth down low, trading hard-earned rebounds and putbacks for three quarters before the Vineyard opened up a 50-38 lead with just over five minutes left to play. Then, disaster struck.

The Vineyard watched their lead quickly shrink to five points with four minutes left, then three points with 2:30 left and then with just over a minute thirty to play Tim Lang drained a three-pointer to tie the game 50-50, capping a 12-0 Clippers run. Falmouth took the lead with a minute left and after a missed three-pointer from the Vineyard, then the Clippers sank four free throws to put their comeback on ice. Final score 56-52 Falmouth.

Jared Regan lead the Vineyard in scoring with 16 points, Rammon Dos Santos had 12 and Aidan Araujo added nine. Next, the boys travel to South Yarmouth with hopes of bouncing back against Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday.

Girls hockey also ran into weather-related boat troubles over the weekend as their season opener against Fontbonne Academy had to be postponed. Instead, on Monday, competition began against the division one Old Rochester Bulldogs. While the final score indicated otherwise, the Vineyard was not outclassed by any means in the 5-0 defeat.

The Vineyarders out-shot the Bulldogs 41-24 and played strong defense that led to mostly even puck possession for the duration of the contest. However, the Vineyarders went up against a brick wall in net for Old Rochester. Captain Megan Nolan played cooler than the ice under her skates, stifling multiple breakaways and was crucial in stopping the Vineyard’s five-on-three powerplay.

On Wednesday the girls host Falmouth at 4:15 p.m. and on Saturday, host Dennis-Yarmouth at 1 p.m.
