Sea scallops are coming to Island food relief agencies this spring as the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust begins a pilot partnership with two local fishermen.

A crash in wholesale seafood prices ensuing from the coronavirus pandemic has led to a surplus of sea scallops, according to an announcement from the preservation trust.

The trust will purchase the sea scallops, which are being landed in overabundance, from captains Wes Brighton of the fishing vessel Martha Rose and Sam Hopkins of the Endurance and donate the catch to the Island Food Pantry, Island Grown Initiative, Good Shepherd Parish, First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, Emergency Food Program, according to the announcement.

A grant from the Fink Family Foundation is supporting the pilot program and the trust is seeking further donations to continue it.
