Mary S. Thomson died on April 11, 2020. She was 61 and had battled metastatic cancer courageously since 2011.
Mary was known for her caring kindness, generosity, warmth, sense of humor and extraordinary artistry. She was a very talented jeweler, painter and master printmaker.
She earned her B.A. in fine arts from Pratt Institute of Art (Brooklyn) in 1980 and her M.F.A. in printmaking from W.V.U in 1982. Shortly there after, she and her husband, Michael Ferguson, moved to Martha’s Vineyard.
In addition to her paintings, etchings, lithographs, serial graphs and multi-media collage artworks, she was perhaps best known for her creating one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces. She also created with Mike hand-carved, hand-painted decorative wooden fish.
She participated in juried fine arts and craft shows for over 20 years, such as the Vineyard Artisans Festival, Artrider Productions, Rose Squared, American Art Market and Wedding Style Magazine.
In addition to her husband of 40 years, she is survived by her mother Lucille; her brother Richard and sister-in-law Maritza; her brother Jeffrey and his husband David Janero; and numerous cousins and aunts.
She wished to be cremated with no formal public memorial service. Her family will celebrate Mary’s life at a later date.
Donations in Mary’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
