Alton L. Hardaway Jr. died suddenly at his home in Oak Bluffs on August 9. He was 72.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. A complete obituary will appear in a future edition of the Gazette.

I am saddened by this great loss. Alton was a wonderful and dynamic man whose gift for social engagement was one of the many qualities that drew people to him. I remember years past with Jackie, Barbara, Ed, and countless other special family members and friends we shared good times with. I honor his life and will cherish the memories we shared. May we all find comfort and peace in the countless memories. He will surely be missed!

I am very sad —-big Al was my friend and I am so lucky that I was able to tell him that I loved him during the past winter. I saw him in his black pick up truck next to the grocery store checking his notes as usual he was a fantastic guy RIP Jeffrey Leistyna
