Halloween 2021 will see the return of some beloved Island traditions. In towns across the Island, there are numerous activities every day leading up to Halloween itself, which falls on a Sunday this year.
William street beckons one and all on Halloween night, perhaps the epicenter of the evening. There is no plan as of yet to close any roads in the area. Trick or treating on Main street in Vineyard Haven begins at 2 p.m. Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs will be closed to cars from 4 to 8 p.m. to provide safe pathways.
In downtown Edgartown, folks like to start early, with trick or treating on Main street beginning at 10 a.m. on Halloween with numerous businesses taking part, and a fur babies-focused event from 11 a.m. to noon, sponsored by Al Fresco Tails Pet Sitting.
Also in Edgartown, Slough Farm is hosting a floral pumpkin craft class at 10 a.m., and EthosMV on North Summer street is throwing a safe Halloween party for kids from 2 to 6 p.m. Costume contests include prizes for best dog costumes.
There is plenty to do up-Island on Halloween, including the West Tisbury Library’s party from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and a visit to the fire station in Chilmark from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. where the volunteer firemen’s association will offer goodie-bag giveaways and photo ops. The Halloween party at the Agricultural Hall also returns this year with spooky hayrides and games from 6 to 8 p.m.
Leading up to the big day, libraries around the Island offer crafts and costume making, and trick or treating on Saturday at the Aquinnah Public Library. Oak Bluffs is a hub of activity, with Halloween in Oak Bluffs from 1 to 4 p.m. on Circuit avenue, with Post Office Square as a hub of activity. The Red House at 12 Beach Road offers pumpkin carving, cider and donuts from 1 to 4 p.m.
For those too big to trick or treat, the Ritz Cafe hosts a Halloween party on Sunday night, with DJ AP and DJ Ricky Prime spinning tunes as revelers compete for a $500 prize for best costume. The Dock Dance plays at Port Hunter.
And for those in need of a celluloid scare, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center is playing Possession on Halloween. But beware, this underground cult horror was once banned under the 1984 “Video Nasties” Act. You have been warned.
