The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a presentation on Saturday, Nov. 20 by Darius Coombs, cultural outreach coordinator for the Mashpee Wampanoag.

The event is called Wampanoag and Noepe as One, and it traces the history of the Wampanoag people on the Vineyard, which goes back thousands of years.

Mr. Coombs will talk about the Wampanoag way of life throughout the centuries and detail the effects on colonization.

Mr. Coombs is the former director of the Wampanoag Indigenous Program at Plimoth Patuxet Museums, and has worked with Smithsonian, History Channel, National Geographic and Scholastic, to name a few organizations he has been affiliated with. He is also the recipient of the 2016 New England Museum Association (NEMA) Award for Excellence and the 2021 Bay State Legacy award.

The event begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and advance registration is required.

The cost is $15/member; $20/non-member. The event can also be viewed virtually by Zoom.
