John C. (Duzza) McCarron died Wednesday, Jan. 12 at his home in Edgartown. He was 59.
Since before high school, John had wanted a career in law enforcement. His career began at age 16 as an Edgartown traffic cop and continued to the end with the Chilmark police department. He was especially proud of his efforts to unionize the officers at the sheriff’s department, where he worked for 20 years. Guided by compassion, an easy smile and knowledge of how big the little things truly are, he carried his positive attitude and sunny disposition into all facets of his life.
Johnny Duzza was truly one of a kind. All who knew him, including many who knew him only briefly, have stories that will forever bring a smile to their faces. He lit up every room he walked into. His dance moves were legendary. His humor knew no bounds, and was always meant with a kind heart.
He was a regular fan at almost all of his nieces and nephews’ sporting events, never missed a chance to say happy birthday, and stopped by to give his mother a hug each week. His unwavering smile and joyful energy elevated every gathering. He had the unique gift of accepting everyone for who they are. The words, “I love you” rolled off his tongue easily.
He had friends from every part of the Vineyard and maintained close bonds with his friends from St. Leo University. All who knew him will miss his charisma, loyalty, authenticity and how special they felt in his presence. One friend said he was the perfect combination of funny, loving and fiercely devoted to family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father Richard McCarron Sr. and brother Richard McCarron Jr. He is survived by his mother Anne; brothers Greg, Phil and Rob, and his sister Mary. He is survived by 12 nieces and nephews to whom he was Uncle Johnny: Erica, Kelly, Charlotte, Greg, Audrey, Shaylee, Kenzie, Emmy, Lily, Sophia, T.J. and Johnny.
He was interred at New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown on Jan. 18.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made to an Island charity of choice.
