The Oak Bluffs select board hired two new police officers Tuesday, pending their successful graduation from the state police academy.
Officers Bobbie Distin and Savanna Barnes were unanimously appointed by the board following endorsements from police chief Eric Blake.
Board member Ryan Ruley, who works as an Edgartown police officer, spoke highly of both candidates.
“I’ve known Bobbie for a couple years,” Mr. Ruley said, “He’s well respected in the town of Edgartown.”
Both new officers have been working as special officers for the Tisbury police department.
Mr. Distin also currently works for the Edgartown highway department.
Ms. Barnes is a graduate of the regional high school. Mr. Ruley said that while he had never met Ms. Barnes personally, he’s often heard her over the radio.
“I know she’s well respected,” he said. “I’ve never heard anything negative.”
Also Tuesday, the board appointed three residents to the streetscape project review committee — a newly formed advisory committee for the streetscape project.
Kathy Laskowski, Christina Izzo and Tommy-Ann Brown were each appointed, and will offer insight during regular on-site streetscape meetings.
“I think all three people will be an asset,” Mr. Ruley said. “I think it’s three great people to have on this [committee].”
