Connecting with a goat, a strange pond creature, a juvenile perspective and beauty in the eye of the beholder, literally, all earned Vineyard students top honors in this year’s Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, sponsored by the Boston Globe Foundation in collaboration with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
In all, 16 students from the regional high school won awards ranging from Gold Key to Silver Key to Honorable Mention. One student from the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School earned recognition.
Senior MVRHS student Hardy Eville earned three gold key awards, one for his photography portfolio entitled Natural Wonders, and two for individual photographs, Connection and Invasive Species.
Senior Kayleigh Bollin earned a gold key for her photograph, Seeing Beauty, and sophomore Tobias Russel-Schaeffer won a gold key for the photograph, Juvenile Perspective.
Gold key winners go on to the national competition in New York city this spring. Since 1923, the Scholastic awards program has honored students in seventh through 12th grade in 29 categories.
Other Island seniors earning honors for portfolios of their work were Dylan Bowen, who received a silver key for Growing Up a Girl, and Kayleigh Bollin, who earned an honorable mention for Making the Invisible Visible.
