Here’s hoping that by the time you read this, these infernal winds will have blown their way out of here. We have had a nice rollercoaster of sun and rain this week, but altogether too much wind for my liking. There is something deeply unsettling about wind that goes on too long, especially if you work outside. While bent against the earth, tucking plants into place, I find myself looking around for flying sheets of plywood or tree branches, anything that might shear my head off.

Speaking of ill winds, West Tisbury was shocked and saddened by the loss of Bruce Anthony Cordray. As well as a husband and father, Tony was a volunteer firefighter for many years, and our adored animal control officer since 2017. Much love and strength to his family and friends.

The Charter School is hosting a potluck Brazilian night from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 with a panel discussion, lots of information about community resources, and a potluck dinner. There will be a celebration of life for Paul Joseph Wilkins, aka Zeke, at the Agricultural Hall from 2 to 5 p.m. on May 14. I have a feeling there are a lot of wonderful stories swirling out there; do take a moment and share.

I know a lot of Islanders like to put their old televisions out by the side of the road, usually right before a good rain. It’s so hard to give up on an old friend! After all, there’s always a chance that a special someone might come along, somebody with a set of tiny screwdrivers and time on their hands for a project. But now, we can forgo that custom and proceed directly to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School with our unwanted electronics. That’s right, it’s Electronic Disposal Day: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 14. This year, the disposal fees collected will help fund the junior class prom.

Don’t forget to look up at the Flower Moon, the first supermoon of the year, which will reach peak illumination at 12:15 a.m. on Monday, May 16. This full moon has also been called the Leaf Budding Moon and the Egg Laying Moon, which I cannot help to pass along because it’s just so lovely.

Happy birthday to Dave Kish. Even if you don’t know the man, you probably know his voice; he has long held down the fort at WMVY on Sundays with his show All That Jazz. Dave’s musical knowledge is so broad, and his delivery so deft, that on certain Sunday mornings, with coffee in hand, even a musical philistine such as myself may pretend at sophistication.
