The ambitious annual fundraiser at the Chappy Community Center was a huge success. Well attended by a lively crowd, the bidding was good- natured and brought in $50,000 — and still counting. The final amount will be doubled by the anonymous $400,000 matching donation.

Thanks to the many folks who organized the event, donated items, offered services and bid generously. The Chappaquiddick Community Center is the heart of the Chappy community. The outpouring of support for this long-range fundraising effort shows how important the center is to Chappy.

Ongoing events at the center include yoga on Sunday, Monday and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., mahjong on Tuesday and Friday from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and pickleball club on Fridays from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m., followed by open movement studio from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

On Saturday, July 23, the Chappaquiddick Community Center classical music series hosts Victoria Vox and Jack Maher. They will play a program titled The Art of the Song from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The music is rooted in poetry and fresh, contemporary uke-pop, with nods toward folk and the heartland, and strains of jazz. You don’t want to miss jazz played on a ukulele.

Wednesday, July 27 is a particularly busy day at the center. Rob Kagan’s signing of his book Noah’s Rejects coincides with the ice cream window; both start at 3 p.m. They are followed by the Vineyard Sound, an a capella group, at 5 p.m. Or if you prefer a quieter activity, go on a snorkeling adventure with The Trustees of Reservations from 2 to 3 p.m. Check out the CCC website at chappycommunitycenter.org for the most up to date information and activities.

The Chappaquiddick Island Association will hold its Summer 2022 Annual Meeting on Saturday, July 30. It convenes at 9 a.m. at the community center, though coffee and pastries will be served starting at 8 a.m. After a two-year hiatus, there will be a lot to talk about at the in-person gathering. This is the only meeting of the association this season.

The annual Chappy Tennis Tournament will also take place Saturday, July 30, beginning with elimination play at 8 a.m., a cocktail party that evening and continuing into Sunday for the final determination of this year’s best pair of tennis players. Matches will be held on courts throughout Chappy, including the community center’s court. The winners get their names added to the coveted Plumb Cup.
