A South Road auto accident that knocked out power for more than 2,000 up-Island customers resulted in no injuries. Power, which was out for approximately 50 minutes, has been restored.
According to the Chilmark police department, a 2011 Toyota Camry operated by a 17-year-old Chilmark resident left the roadway in the area of 50 South Road shortly after 11 a.m., striking a stone wall, tree and utility pole and causing damage to all. Chilmark and West Tisbury police and fire personnel and Tri-Town Ambulance were dispatched to the area.
The immediate section of South Road was closed until Eversource deemed the scene safe.
The operator appeared to have become distracted while driving and was cited on scene for marked lane violation, police said.
