One morning of 50 degrees last week got people talking about the fall.

Activities at the Chappy Community Center will wind down in the coming weeks. The final classical music series concert takes place this Saturday, August 20. It features Derek Bermel and the Jasper String Quartet. Voting for the 2023 calendar photo contest ends Sunday, August 21. The last lobster roll dinner is on Wednesday, August 31. Get your orders in by 5 p.m. on Monday. The very last snorkeling adventure with The Trustees of Reservations on Wednesday, Aug 31 from 2 to 3 p.m. Yoga and mahjong will continue weekly into September. Check the center’s website at chappycommunitycenter.org for the latest updates.

This Friday — August 19 — the J. McLaughlin men’s and women’s clothing store will hold a fundraiser for the Chappaquiddick Community Center. Sip and shop from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 15 per cent of all sales will be donated to the center. The store is located at 43 Main street in Edgartown, across the street from Edgartown Books.

Find out how Chappy is being prepared for the next storm. Edgartown fire chief Alex Schaeffer will introduce Chappy’s new emergency response team (CERT) at an open meeting and Q&A taking place on Wednesday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chappy Community Center.

The Chappy Ferry vessels will undergo various inspections during the last week of the summer. Expect delays during the mornings of both Monday, August 29 and Thursday, September 1. Further specifics will be forthcoming as those days approach. On Monday, an insurance assessment will be performed and on Thursday the U.S. Coast Guard does their annual in the water safety re-certification.

During those mornings, there will be periods of time when only one boat will be running. Historically the last week of August has been quieter than the first week of September. The days following Labor Day always see a big increase in contractor traffic as summer rentals end.
