A sailor who fell overboard in the waters east of Chappaquiddick on August 22 was rescued by two members of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Boat S300, according to the BCSO. The man, located 1.6 nautical miles from where he fell in after an hour’s search in the fog, driving rain and rough seas, was safely returned to the Encore sailing out of Vineyard Haven.
According to the August 23 press release, BCSO Lieutenant John Doherty and Mashpee Police Officer Ben Tamash were patrolling the waters off Vineyard Haven when the distress call came in at 11:50 a.m. Upon arrival, the crew coordinated with with Edgartown Fire and Rescue, the harbormaster and U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews to search the area and at 12:49 p.m. spotted the man overboard.
