With Halloween falling on a Monday this year, the coming weekend will feel like a three-day holiday.
Oak Bluffs starts things up on Saturday with a parade, trick or treating and a scavenger hunt on Circuit avenue. The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. and the fun continues to 4 p.m. Scavenger hunt clues can be picked up at Basics that afternoon.
On Sunday, the costumed fun switches to Main street in Edgartown from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Monday, Vineyard Haven takes its turn as host. A parade gets underway at 3:45 p.m. followed by a costume contest and trick or treating.
Also on Monday, the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse and Martha’s Vineyard Museum welcome visitors for more trick or treating and spooky stories. The playhouse is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Halloween on the Hill takes place at the museum from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
For the main event, Halloween night trick or treating, road closures will help keep costumed kids safe. In Vineyard Haven, to prepare for the throngs headed to William street, road closures begin at 5 p.m. on Spring street from Look street to Main street; Franklin street from Clough Lane to Spring street; Center street from Franklin to Main; and Church street from Franklin to Main.
In Oak Bluffs, Vineyard avenue will be closed from its intersection with Dukes County avenue to Pacific avenue from 4 to 8 p.m.
The Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury beckons one and all from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night for hay rides through the cemetery, games and treats. And in Chilmark, the firemen’s association invites local children to the Chilmark Community Center for goodie bags from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Halloween.
Kids aren’t the only ones who get to have fun though. The annual Zombie Bar Crawl in Oak Bluffs gets underway starting at 7 p.m. at Post Office Square on Friday night, and The Ritz Cafe hosts live music and DJs starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Costumes are encouraged at the Habitat for Humanity Dance Party at the Portuguese American Club on Saturday night from 7 to 10 p.m. The Port Hunter in Edgartown closes its season with a Halloween party featuring the Dock Dance Band, starting at 8 p.m. on Monday.
And if you want to hold onto the spooky feel beyond October 31, historian Thomas Dresser’s self-guided walking tours of haunted places in downtown Edgartown can be downloaded from the Built Story app and enjoyed at any time. The darkness of night enhances the experience.
