Since the shortest day of the year back in December, sunrise has been a half-hour earlier and sunset is a whole hour later. It’s particularly noticeable being at the beginning and end of the common workday. The drawback is that vehicle drivers getting on board the Chappy Ferry in Edgartown are looking right into the glaring sun on cloudless mornings.
Traffic flow is pretty light on the ferry these days but I expect contractors to soon realize that Memorial Day is just around the corner and they need to get to work soon on the projects that they promised to do over the winter.
At least a couple of concrete swimming pools have been installed on Chappy so far in this off-season. It’s ironic that the wintery weather was so cold and damp when the concrete mixers headed over to build something that gets enjoyed on the hottest days of the summer. A swimming pool on an island with such nice beaches might seem a tad silly. They do, however, make great reservoirs for fire-fighting water.
I noticed on the Chappy Community Center calendar that the first ice cream window is scheduled for June 28. That’s a mere third of a year away. Soon you will be signing up for sailing and tennis lessons. In the meantime, there’s yoga on Sundays and potlucks every month on the third Wednesday.
The Zoom meeting of the Chappy Ferry Nonprofit Corporation effort last Saturday was attended by more than 100 people. Lots of details still need to be worked out. Most importantly, there appears to be community support for the concept. To get the announcements for future meetings, make sure that you are on the Chappaquiddick Island Association or Chappaquiddick Community Center email list. They will also be posted in the Chappy Chat group on Facebook and in this column.
