Three years ago, Island-based singer-songwriters Phil daRosa, Kate Taylor and Isaac Taylor, along with Rebecca Correia of New Bedford and Nashville, made their Nashville debut under the name The Island Collective. Rotating between solo and group performances, the musicians hoped to bring a little Island music magic to the Tennessee stage.
After a pandemic hiatus, the group performed its second show in Nashville last November, now with fifth member David Saw.
On Friday, April, 14 the musicians take the stage closer to home, at PathwaysArts in Chilmark. Doors open for the free show at 6:30 p.m.
Graham Smith will be doing live video compositing to complement the tempo of the music.
“The whole premise is to connect the dots from Martha’s Vineyard to Nashville with people who go to both places or are from one or the other,” said Mr. daRosa.
Ms. Correia and Mr. daRosa are long-time musical collaborators and were the first to come up with the idea. Ms. Correia has been splitting her time between Nashville and New Bedford for several years.
The Island Collective is still in its infant stage, said Mr. daRosa. Its first show happened just weeks before the beginning of the pandemic and the team had to quickly set aside hopes of performing together again soon.
Mr. daRosa is hopeful, though, that the musical partnership will grow and that they will be able to recruit more singers and musicians interested in developing a Vineyard/Nashville sound.
“This is just the beginning of a bigger picture to link more Vineyarders to Nashville and vice versa,” he said.
Island Collective performs two 45-minute sets of solo and group pieces at the show on Friday.
PathwaysArts is located at 9 State Road in Chilmark.
