Athena (Tina) Hanjoglu died May 5 of natural causes in Astoria, N.Y. She was 78.
She was born to George and Rose Hanjoglu in New York City and lived in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, N.Y. for most of her life. She graduated from Long Island City High School and then earned a bachelor of arts in history and education as well as certification in administration and supervisions from Queens College, City University of New York. She was a beloved teacher, dean and assistant principal in the New York City school system.
Tina spent many years summering on Martha’s Vineyard, a place she truly loved, with her friends Ruth Scarville Bonaparte, Millie Henderson and Kathryn Allen — known to many as the Dowdell sisters. Their cottage on Narragansett avenue in Oak Bluffs was Tina’s home away from home. She enjoyed sunbathing at Town Beach, cooking and entertaining. She and the Dowdell sisters’ mother Ozella spent many precious hours together while exploring up-Island.
Tina had many friends on the island and she will be missed by all.
