Christine A. Powers of Waltham died Sunday, July 9, following a long illness. She was 70.

She was born on August 24, 1952 at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. She was the daughter of the late Paul F.X. Powers and Elizabeth Stout Powers. She grew up in Waltham and was a graduate of Matignon High School. The Powers family often vacationed on Martha’s Vineyard.

In the 1970s Christine moved to the Vineyard. She worked on the staff of the Vineyard Gazette as a layout artist and writer. She was known as ‘Stine.

She returned to Waltham in the mid 1980s, earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and found work at Keystone Mutual Funds — later re-named Evergreen Investments — as an operations specialist for many years. During that time she also earned her MBA from Bentley University.

All who knew Christine remember her as an avid gardener who found her special joys in caring for her sunflowers and vegetables with her father, summer vacations on Martha’s Vineyard and Scrabble.

She is mourned her many lifelong friends, her loving partner Kenneth A. Johnson of Waltham, and by Mr. Timmy, their beloved cat.

A private remembrance will be held at a later date, with interment to follow at another time.

Memorial donations may be made to either the Multiple Sclerosis Society of America at: nationalmssociety.org. or to the Cat Connection, a no-kill cat rescue organization, at thecatconnection.org.
