The Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association is holding its annual used tackle sale Saturday, Sept. 2, giving Islanders an opportunity to stock up on supplies before the upcoming Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

The sale will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and all profits go towards scholarships for Island students. Back for its seventh year, the event has always been held over Labor Day weekend.

The 78th Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby begins on Sept. 10 and runs until Oct. 14. Pre-registration is open online at mvderby.com.

“We have all the gear they need,” said Donald Scarpone, the president of the surfcaster’s association. “We have fishing rods for squidding all the way to tuna fishing, and we have every lure in between.”

The surfcasters spend the days before the sale cleaning reels and rods, and changing hooks on all of the lures. And there is a lot of cleaning and changing to do. Mr. Scarpone said that about 300 rods and reels and 1,000 lures have been donated to the sale.

Though the sale runs into the early afternoon, Mr. Scarpone said shoppers looking for something specific should get there early.

“Quality goes quick,” he said. “We have a lot of quality stuff, and we have a lot of everyday stuff and stuff for beginners.”

Plenty of parking is available at the high school, and everything from fishing rods to canoes will be available for perusing.
