Rain and wind. We were lucky to not have more from Tropical Storm Ophelia. After Hurricane Lee was a threat last week, we were all very prepared for what this storm might have given us.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Lucas De Oliveira and Benjamin Donato, who celebrated Sept. 24, McCabe Neadow and Michael Waters on Sept. 25, Quinlan Meuse and Jake Stanton on Sept. 27, Helena Goncalves and Gabrielle McKenzie on Sept. 28, Conor Beeson on Sept. 29 and to Colt Hannah, Jocie Smith and Jax Trot, who all celebrate on Sept. 30.

It is sort of an unwritten rule that the heat does not come on until the first of November. I must confess that I had to break that rule this past weekend. With the rain and damp, the house was much cooler inside than it was outside. I have a feeling I was not the only one to break this unwritten rule.

Since we’ve reached the end of September, I decided to take a ride through town last Sunday after work. It is wedding season so I knew things would still be happening downtown, but I was surprised to see all the cars that were still parked in town and there were quite a few people walking around. Celebration Tents was leaving town and I figured the truck had just come from the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, which we all know is a popular and beautiful place for a wedding. There were a lot of stores still open. Alchemy was decorated with corn stalks and pumpkins, ready for the fall season.

There were sale signs in many windows. I saw a few men standing outside stores, holding bags and waiting for their other half to finish shopping. Edgartown Books was all lit up and Backwater Trading Company had its wagon out with mums in it.

Even though it was a rainy day the harbor was still beautiful. A lot of boats were at their moorings, I guess because of the storm, but they were all equipped and ready to go for the next fishing adventure. The grand prize boat for the derby is sitting in front of the weigh-in station. Kids are coming out of The Candy Bazaar, happy with their treats.

Among the Flowers was empty but it had lights on and the chairs piled up after what was, I am sure, a busy breakfast morning. Around the corner on North Water street, Murdick’s Fudge was very tempting, I love their cheese popcorn but I went by and up Winter street.

I headed home, thinking how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful town.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
