The next Chappaquiddick Community Center potluck supper is on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a dish to serve eight people. Sign up to host a dinner. It’s actually fun. I recommend staying after to help clean up. In all, it’s a very pleasant way to spend the evening with neighbors.

For now, the AA Big Book meeting at the community center is suspended for the winter. Hopefully it start up again in the spring. See aaonmv.org for a complete list of meetings on the Vineyard.

For those of you stuck with living in America in the off-season, the fall on Chappy this year continues to be pretty colorful. The ticks are back in great numbers. The highway department cleaned the catch basins. Lots of concrete mixers have been coming over to pour several foundations and a swimming pool. The Royal and Ancient Chappaquiddick Links golf course is keeping busy. There are always empty parking spaces at the ferry point.

The long-range forecast is for a snowy winter ahead. Whether you will be here or not, it may be a requirement of your caretaker, your fuel company or even your home owner’s insurance to maintain vehicle access to your house. Now would be a good time to get in touch with one of the snow plowing providers on Chappy.

I ran into longtime Chappy fisherman Mike Carotta recently. He has written a book about his life lessons learned while fishing the Island waters. It is called A Long Cast – Reflections on 50 Years of Visiting the Martha’s Vineyard Surf. A wonderful read for fisher folk as well as normal folk. Google the title and author. There are lots of ways to get hold of a copy. It’s a great Christmas present to go along with the Chappaquiddick Community Center calendar.
