Adverse weather conditions have delayed an attempt to swim from Nantucket to the Vineyard planned for this upcoming Tuesday.

Lead swimmer Doug McConnell, who has attempted the swim three previous times, said that Tuesday’s relay swim was postponed when weather forecasts showed “wind against tide” conditions for that day.

With tides pulling one way and wind pushing the other, the swim would have been particularly difficult, with the spotter boats struggling to keep a close watch on the swimmers, Mr. McConnell said.

The relay race was set to raise money for A Long Swim, a charity established by Mr. McConnell that raises money for ALS research.

The tides that make the swim possible only occur every two weeks, Mr. McConnell said, plus or minus a day. But the relay team and spotter vessels couldn’t adjust their schedules in time to shift the relay to a different day.

With summer responsibilities gearing up as the Vineyard enters August, the full team of swimmers would not be able to attempt the swim again until September, Mr. McConnell said.

He’s hopeful the September date proves to be the winning one.
