The Vineyarders rolled to a 49-15 gridiron victory in their home opener Saturday against the Bishop Brady Giants.
The Vineyard’s ground and pound game was on full display as they scored all seven of their touchdowns in the first half. Jordan Souza found the end zone three times, Guilherme Oliveira twice and Simon Arbelaez rumbled for one as well. On defense, Cal D’Arcy recovered a fumble and ran it back for a 50-yard house call.
Up next, the Vineyarders will face Brighton at home on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The field hockey team got a big first win against Brockton Monday afternoon as they blanked the boxers 2-0. Coach Kaitlyn Benoit said the girls displayed a courageous team effort in the win and she is very proud of the way they played.
“I think they moved the ball very well up the field,” Coach Benoit said. “Massive defensive effort to keep the ball up field by defensive mid fielder Abby Geary.”
Charlotte Scott and Carolina Smith put the points on the board for the Vineyarders while Sierra Flanders kept Brockton off the board and earned the shutout. The team faces a tough next match against Monomoy, who is not only one of the best teams on the Cape but one of the best in the entire division. The Sharks come to the Island Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match.
The girls soccer team has won two in a row after falling in their first match to Saint John Paul II., Their offense came alive against Dennis-Yarmouth on the Cape last week for a 6-0 win and on Monday they took down Whitinsville Christian 3-1 in their home opener.
Against D-Y, Ava Townes scored twice, Reese Malowski, Laina Dubin, Talia Maccaferri and Eleanor Mone all also put the ball in the net. And on the defensive side of things Delilah Oliver earned the shutout in net with three saves.
Against the Crusaders, Mone scored twice and Maccaferri netted the third. Malowski had two assists and Sydney Bruguiere had an assist as well. Up next, the girls have another home game against Archbishop Williams Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The golf team could not secure a win in their first two matchups of the season. Against Monomoy on the road last week, they lost by six strokes despite Jacoby Light’s 37, the lowest score amongst all golfers.
Against Barnstable in their second match, this time at Farm Neck, the Vineyarders were bested by 17 strokes. Nick Rabini had the best round for the Vineyarders, carding a 39 for four over par. Their next chance to get in the win column is against Dennis-Yarmouth on the Cape on Thursday.
The boys soccer team is also still searching for their first win of the season. They were defeated 2-1 by Saint John Paul II in their season opener and then 1-0 by Dennis-Yarmouth two days later. Next up they take on Cohasset at home Friday at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, before football team kicked off, the cross country team hosted the 17th annual Vineyard cross country invitational. Runners from 29 different schools took to the state forest and around the high school campus for the massive meet. Paul Steyer earned the best result for the home team. The junior placed seventh in the boys varsity 5K with a time of 16:47.59.
In other Vineyard bests, in the junior varsity 5K, Luis Costa finished eighth with a time of 19:05.28. And in the freshman 3K, Noah Burns finished 26th at 12:34.65. For the girls, Emma Squire had the highest Vineyard result in the varsity 5K at 24th with a time of 21:19.73. In the junior varsity 5K, River Maxner finished 36th at 21:01.99 and in the freshman 3K Maddie Coulter finished 28th at 16:48.45.
