Bernardo (Bernard) Joseph Gonsalves died unexpected at his home in Miami. He was 75.

Bernardo was the son of Joseph B. and Evelyn (Silvia) Gonsalves. He attended grade school in New Bedford. Later his family moved back to the Vineyard where he graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Region High School.

He received a degree in nursing from Salve Regina University and doctorate degree in public health from Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army as a hospital administrator.

Bernard relocated to Washington DC where he successfully pursued a real estate career. He was recognized as being the “Top Producer” with Long & Foster Real Estate. He was also in the top one per cent in nationwide in home sales.

He then moved to Miami Beach and since 2010 was a realtor/agent with Gary Hennes Realtors. There he made many friends and was part of their families.

Bernardo was a worldwide traveler and made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed sharing his experiences with others.

He found pleasure in boating, reading, cooking and fine dining with family and friends. He was known for his elegant style in food and clothing.

He was physically fit and enjoyed working out at his gym. He also had a quick wit and great sense of humor.

Bernardo will be remembered as being a kind, honest and generous man. He was a loving brother, uncle, cousin and friend with a passion for life.

He was a devout Catholic and his life and beliefs centered around his faith.

Bernardo is predeceased by his parents, Joseph B and Evelyn (Silvia) Gonsalves; brother in law, John Cosmo; niece and godchild, Christie Cosmo; brother. Joseph and his wife Mildred; nephew, Anthony (Tuffy); and niece, Evelyn Larkin.

He is survived by sister Doris Cosmo and her children John(Jay) and Beth; nieces Margaret Oliveira and Yvette Turner; nephews Joe and John Gonsalves, along with many cousins and godchildren. He will be missed dearly by all.

His mass will be held in Miami, and his cremains will be buried at a later time in Oak Grove cemetery next to his parents, brother, niece and nephew.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask to make donations to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
