The On Time 2 voyaged to Vineyard Haven last Sunday and is now hauled out at the Packer Marine railway. The blue bottom is now free of all barnacles and weed. The US Coast Guard inspectors will arrive shortly to give the hull a going over with an experienced eye. They inspect hundreds of vessels every year and often have a particular concern for an issue that may have appeared in other wooden hulls. They make sure that the ferry boat is sound inside and out. Then the bottom gets two coats of antifouling paint and the topsides get a new coat of glossy white epoxy. The scrapes and scratches on the vehicle deck get smoothed out and a nice thick layer of non-skid rubber gets applied. The propellers get a thorough polishing and new sacrificial anti-electrolysis zincs get attached to all of the stainless steel and bronze apparatus below the waterline. Fortunately, the weather is favorable for this kind of work. When all of this is completed, the ferry boat will return to Edgartown to serve as back up for the On Time 3.
