Paul Steyer and Emma Squire are headed to Fort Devens this weekend to represent the Vineyard as individual runners in the cross country state finals. After a stellar season for the two seniors, they will have a chance to run again at the same track they qualified on last weekend, with an opportunity for personal accolades. In a field of over 170 in the boys race and 160 in the girls, Steyer finished fifth with a time of 16:56.78 and Squire finished 27th with a time of 21:49.07.
Head coach Joe Schroeder said the two runners have been lighting it up the whole year. Both are new students to the Island as well, Steyer is an exchange student from France while Squire moved to the Vineyard from Harvard, Mass.
“They elevated our whole program, we were ready to take that next step and they helped us get there by raising the level of practice and performance,” Coach Schroeder said.
While the boys team just missed the cut to qualify for states, finishing ninth overall, the Vineyarders also recently had a strong showing at the Cape and Islands league championship earlier this month. As a team, they had the lowest average time and finished third overall at the course hosted by Dennis-Yarmouth on the Cape.
Individually, three Vineyard boys finished top three, Steyer, second at 16:16, Broden Vincent, eighth at 17:45, and Luis Costa tenth at 17:59. For the girls, Squire finished ninth at 21:05, and in the junior varsity race Noah and Mason Burns finished first and sixth respectively with times of 19:18 and 20:41.
Coach Schroeder said Noah Burns “absolutely cooked it” in his win of the JV race. He also praised him for shaving two and a half minutes off his time and moving up to the fourth spot on the roster. Overall, the head coach said he was very happy with how his team continued to improve and stick with it throughout the season.
The all-stars for the Cape and Islands league cross country teams have also been announced. For the Vineyarders, Steyer, Vincent and Squire all made the first team. Costa and Sophia Alves were given honorable mention. The boys team also won the leagues’ sportsmanship award.
The girls soccer team is also making waves as four Vineyarders were named to the all league team. Talia Maccafeerri, Eleanor Mone, Reese Malowski and Ella Ehrman received the accolade and Sydney Bruguiere was given an honorable mention. Sportsmanship awards were given to Esme Colon and Nevah Fitzgerals.
Mone and Malowski also earned first team Eastern Mass all-star status and will play in the all-star game at Woburn High School on Nov. 24.
Also last week, the football team rolled to a third straight victory as they toppled Wareham 35-8 on the road.
On the offensive side of the ball, Jordan Souza scored twice and Guilherme Oliveria also notched two touchdowns. William Nicholson rounded out the scoring with another score in the victory.
Defensively, Caio Guimaraes forced two fumbles and added two sacks. Peyton Tabares and Grady McCracken also had sacks while Souza and Matthew MacMillian snatched interceptions.
On Friday the boys play their last home game of the season against Nauset. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The Warriors come in with six wins and three losses on the season and should be a formidable foe for the Vineyarders as they look to keep their momentum rolling right on into the Island Cup at Fenway Park.
