A rooster with plumage made of fishing lures will be joining the animals at the Agricultural Society this summer. The bird is the focal point of this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society fair poster, created by Abe Pieciak.

Mr. Pieciak’s said he was inspired to submit to the annual competition after attending the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury’s Christmas Eve service held at the Agricultural Hall.

“I was at the holiday pageant Christmas Eve and the whole Ag Hall was full of people singing Christmas carols. It was a beautiful moment,” he said in an interview with the Gazette. “I looked up at the rafters at all the posters, and I was like, oh man, I want to be up there.”

Mr. Pieciak started working on the watercolor in January. The lures that make up the rooster are a mainstay of his work.

“That’s my signature thing, is lure-filled fish. I wanted to incorporate that somehow,” he said.

The image is bordered by two sunflowers, and a pennant with the Vineyard secession flag hangs above the rooster.

“I love sunflowers in the fall when they all dry out and animals start to eat them,” Mr. Pieciak said.

Mr. Pieciak had submitted a piece to the fair poster contest one other time, created while he was living in Maine.

“I really needed to be on the Island for it,” he said. “Where I’m living now in Chilmark, the energy is great to create. The energy felt right to do another one.”

Mr. Pieciak is a self-taught artist who usually does mixed-media. He was been making art since he could walk.

“I was always out and about....I like being outside and being in nature, and then I liked to doodle and make some art,” he said. “I never stopped.”

Mr. Pieciak’s work is currently on display at Copperworks Gallery in Chilmark.

The 163rd Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Fair takes place from August 21 to August 24.
