As the second month of winter sports gets under way, all four regional high school varsity teams maintain their winning records, with boys’ basketball still undefeated.
The boys play Bishop Feehan at home tomorrow at 3 p.m. Girls’ hockey will also be on home ice tomorrow, taking on Hanover/Cohasset at 12:30 p.m.
Boys’ Basketball
Senior captain Peter Keaney scored his 1,000th career point before a home crowd last Wednesday, as the Vineyarders defeated Norton 75-53. Keaney’s milestone came on his final layup of the game. Junior Jack Roberts notched 31 points to lead the Vineyard in scoring.
The boys maintain a perfect 5-0 record going into league play, which starts tomorrow in a home matchup against Bishop Feehan. Game play begins at 3 p.m.
Girls’ Basketball
The Vineyarders surged back from a halftime deficit to take down visiting Norton last Wednesday, scoring 40 points in the second half and defeating the Lancers 61-44. Junior Jennie Lindland scored 24 points, including eight in the third quarter, and had eight steals.
Fellow juniors Maggie Riseborough and Kendall Robinson turned in 10 points and 11 points respectively, with Robinson landing two three-pointers and scoring six points in the third quarter.
Offensive support also came from seniors Alex Mark (three points, five rebounds) and Hanna Persson (five points), juniors Alayna Hutchinson (two points) and Katie Stewart (four points), and freshman Lucy Hackney (two points, two key rebounds). Senior Madison Hughes and Lindland anchored the defensive shutdown of Norton.
The girls are now 4-1 on the season. League play begins this week, with the team taking on Bishop Feehan today in an away game, and Somerset at home on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Girls’ Hockey
The girls move to a 3-2 season record (2-0) in league play after splitting this week’s game against Marshfield and Hanover/Cohasset. The team fell 1-0 to Marshfield last Wednesday, but took home a decisive 6-1 league win at Hanover on the back of senior captain Celia Mercier’s five goals. League play continues tomorrow in a home rematch with Hanover/Cohasset at 12:30 p.m.
Boys’ Hockey
Eastern Athletic Conference play began for the Vineyarders this week, with the boys taking home a 3-1 away win against Coyle-Cassidy on Wednesday. The win puts the team at 5-2 on the season; they have won four of their last five games.
Saturday saw a 10-2 rout of visiting Nantucket.
The boys will play at home against EAC opponent Bishop Stang on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
