The Nan Rheault Invitational tournament takes place this weekend at the MV Arena, spotlighting the girls’ hockey teams. Boys’ hockey and boys’ basketball also have home games.

Girls’ Hockey

The Vineyarders skated to a 6-0 win over visiting Hanover/Cohasset Saturday, moving the team to a 4-2 record. They are 3-0 in league play.

Junior goalie Texe Craig recorded her first shutout of the season, notching 22 saves.

The milestones piled up throughout the game, with freshman Sydney Davies scoring her first-ever varsity goal on an assist from senior Lizzie Kelleher early in the second period and senior captain Maggie Johnson turning in her first goal of the season in the third on assists from junior Tayla Kuehne and fellow captain Celia Mercier.

Mercier found the net twice while scoring three assists, as did junior Emily Cimeno. Junior Kassidy Bettencourt scored her second goal of the season.

The Nan Rheault Invitational begins this Saturday at the arena, with Peabody and Wilmington taking the ice at 5 p.m. and the Vineyard matching up with Scituate at 7:15 p.m. A ceremony honoring Sam Sherman, founding coach of the varsity girls’ hockey program, will take place at 7 p.m.

The tournament continues Sunday with the consolation game starting at 11:00 a.m. The championship game takes place at 1 p.m.

Following the home tournament, the girls travel to Barnstable on Wednesday.

Boys’ Hockey

League play continued for the boys this week, with the Vineyarders taking down visiting Bishop Stang on Wednesday 5-2. The team is now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the EAC.

Previously undefeated Bishop Stang outshot the Vineyarders 7-2 in the first period, and scored the first goal of the game early in the second; senior goaltender Mike Sylvia fended off the Spartan attack until the team could regroup.

The Vineyarders outshot their opponents 18-6 in the second, with senior Colby Gouldrup evening the score on assists from fellow seniors Tyler Araujo and Nelson Dickson. Just over a minute into the third period, sophomores Tyson Araujo and Brian Fraser blazed through a series of short passes that ended on an Araujo score.

Bishop Stang landed a shorthanded goal with 11 minutes left in the game, but Gouldrup answered the challenge a minute later, scoring on the power play after assists from the Araujo brothers to put the Vineyarders up 3-2. Sophomore Sam Burke scored on another Fraser assist with a minute remaining and Tyler Araujo drove home the victory on an assist from Gouldrup.

“It was an exciting game for anyone who’s watching it,” said head coach Matt Mincone,“But there’s some key plays where we have to be more disciplined.” The early-game penalties taken by the Vineyard “put our back against the wall,” Mincone continued.

But as the game progressed, the team “stuck to what we’re trying to do,” he said. “We stuck to our system.”

With their sixth win and second conference victory, the team is already ahead of its 2011 season record.

“The bulls-eye’s on us,” said Mincone. “They’ve never been in that position before.”

The boys will play Bishop Feehan at home at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, and travel to Dennis-Yarmouth on Monday. They visit league opponent Somerset on Wednesday.

Boys’ Basketball

The Vineyarders split their conference schedule this week, rallying from a double-digit deficit against EAC rival Bishop Feehan Saturday only to fall 54-51, and outpacing Somerset 83-61 on Tuesday.

Senior Peter Keaney helmed the third-quarter Vineyard comeback against Feehan, hitting two crucial threes, while junior Izak Brown scored the tying point early in the fourth. The teams traded points until five minutes remained on the clock, at which point Feehan moved ahead 48-43. Keaney nailed a three-pointer, his second of the game, to bring the Vineyard effort back, though a series of free throws pushed Feehan up once again.

The Vineyard was down 52-48 with 18 seconds left; with 7.3 seconds left, junior Jack Roberts hit a three to move the score to 52-51. Feehan moved ahead again in the final seconds, and while Keaney made a final attempt to recreate his previous three-point success, the 54-51 score held.

Keaney turned in 17 points against Feehan, while Roberts had 8. Brown and fellow junior Brandon Watkins each scored 7; seniors Delmont Araujo and Ryan Fisher notched 6 apiece. The boys will rematch with the Shamrocks in an away game on January 24.

The Feehan loss was the Vineyarders’ first of the season; they are now 6-1 and 1-1 in the EAC.

The boys play on home court twice this week, taking on Bourne at 3 p.m on Sunday and league opponent Coyle-Cassidy on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Scores for Thursday’s game against Norton were unavailable at press time.

Girls’ Basketball

The Vineyarders move to a 4-3 record after this week’s conference games, falling 72-36 to Bishop Feehan last Friday and 60-56 to Somerset at home on Tuesday. Senior Maggie Riseborough scored 20 points in both games. Scores for Thursday’s game against Norton were unavailable at press time.

The girls take on Coyle-Cassidy in an away game Tuesday.
