Jean E. Calhoun of East Boston and Oak Bluffs, died on Oct. 2 at her home in East Boston. She was 97.

She was born in East Boston on Jan. 16, 1914, to Edward J. Smith and Katherine A. Smith.

Jean was a graduate of East Boston High School in 1931 and of Bryant and Stratton School.

She had been an almost lifetime visitor to Oak Bluffs. Coming on the day excursion from Boston by train and boat at the age of 14, she was introduced to the Methodist Camp Ground, where she spent most of her summers for the last 83 years. She enjoyed all the usual summer activities.

In her last years she enjoyed chats on her porch and talking with the tourists.

For 92 years she was a member of what is now Grace Church Federated, where she was known as the “Mitten Lady,” having made thousands over the years as well as other knitted goods for the church fairs. Among her other interests was traveling, which she was glad she had done while she could still travel.

Jean was the wife of the late George W. Calhoun, mother of Katherine B. Calhoun and sister of Edward J. Smith Jr.

Funeral services were held at the Magrath Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Coots of Everett.

Interment was at the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery.
