Admit it, you’re an American Idol fanatic. Well, even if you’re not, have never heard of the show perhaps, there is reason for Vineyarders to tune in to the current season.
Last week, at the Pittsburgh auditions for the show, Erika Van Pelt scored a yellow ticket to Hollywood with her rendition of Carol King’s Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.
Ms. Van Pelt is a native of Rhode Island, but a regular on these shores. Last summer she ruled Edgartown, singing weekly gigs at the Wharf and the Atlantic, while also headlining Jerry Bennett’s Sultans of Swing group. The Sultans play just about every fund-raiser and wedding on the Island that does not include Johnny Hoy.
Ms. Van Pelt sang at the Taste of the Vineyard last summer, the site of all those men in Nantucket Reds preparing her for performing in front of judge and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.
Mr. Tyler was especially appreciative of Ms. Van Pelt’s gifts.
American Idol airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox. Check out Ms. Van Pelt’s competition as the Colorado auditions get underway tonight and the Texas auditions tomorrow.
