At least two Vineyard teams will see postseason action in March, with both the boys’ hockey and basketball teams clinching tournament berths this week.

Boys’ Basketball

The boys extended their win streak this week, taking down two conference opponents in the process. On Friday, the Vineyarders defeated visiting Bishop Stang 61-39, with senior Peter Keaney scoring 18 points. Junior Izak Browne scored 13 points and had nine rebounds, while junior Jack Roberts notched 12 points.

EAC rival Bishop Feehan offered a greater challenge to the Vineyarders during Tuesday’s away game, with the boys holding on to a 64-57 win after being down 17-2 in the first quarter. In that playoff-clinching win, Keaney turned in a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Roberts scored 24 points; senior Delmont Araujo had 11 rebounds.

The boys are now 10-1 overall and 4-1 in league play. They play at home today at 4:30 p.m. in an EAC matchup against Somerset.

Boys’ Hockey

The Vineyarders took their first home loss of the season Wednesday, falling 2-0 to Coyle-Cassidy to move the team to a 10-3 record (4-1 in league play) overall. The team defeated Coyle 3-1 earlier this month, but the visiting Warriors “just outplayed us,” in the rematch, said head coach Matt Mincone.

On Saturday, the boys traveled to Minnechaug High School, defeating their opponents 5-2 for their 10th win of the season. Coach Mincone noted the solid play of the Vineyard third line: Iunior Kyp Cooperrider scored two goals, junior Shay Hill notched one, and junior Max Davies landed two assists.

The Minnechaug win qualified the Vineyarders for the state tournament. The team continues league play this week, at Bishop Stang tomorrow and at Bishop Feehan on Wednesday.

Girls’ Hockey

The Vineyarders split their games this week, falling 6-1 to Sandwich on Sunday but defeating league opponent Quincy/North Quincy 4-1 on Wednesday. The team is now 6-5 with a 4-1 league record.

Junior Emily Cimeno landed the first Vineyard goal against Q/NQ, with assists coming from seniors Maggie Johnson and Celia Mercier. Senior Lizzie Kelleher scored on an assist from classmate Rilla Hammett, while Mercier found the net on an assist from senior Lily Gazaille. Senior Callie Jackson secured the victory.

The girls play Mansfield at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. Saturday’s game against Boston Latin was rescheduled for Feb. 22.

Girls’ Basketball

The girls fell 54-43 in an away game against EAC opponent Bishop Stang last Friday. The team is now 5-5 on the season. Last Sunday’s game against Bishop Feehan was rescheduled for Feb. 9. This Sunday they play Nantucket at 3 p.m. at home.
