Tomorrow, June 9, is in many ways the start of summer, at least in West Tisbury. This is the day the West Tisbury Farmers’ Market begins its season. The eating and shopping starts at 9 a.m. at the Grange Hall and keeps munching on until noon.
As its name implies, the market includes all manner of local produce. Strawberries and asparagus are in season. Those in the know say it’s a great year for bitter greens too — if that doesn’t make you smile, what will?
But the market is more than just a place to buy your gifts from the ground, grown right here on the Island. It’s a chance to meet your farmers, envy their tans and healthy glow, and take a moment to say thanks for their very hard work.
Let us not forget the egg rolls, made fresh every morning by the “Egg Roll Lady,” (just look for the line), the popovers from Kitchen Porch, the wheat grass shots, homemade salsa and lemonade, fresh baked bread, just-caught fish, eggs laid a few seconds earlier, yogurt and cheese care of Vineyard grazing cows, flowers, honey. The list goes on and on, but the carbon footprint doesn’t.
The market is open every Saturday during the summer and on July 4 begins its Wednesday run too; same time, same place.
