I am sitting at my computer and waiting for the rain to begin. I have looked at the Doppler radar a hundred times tonight looking to see where the storms are. We really need the rain, but it seems to miss us every time. So let’s just hope we get some much-needed rain in the next couple of days.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Elizabeth Dourian who celebrated her day July 19, and to John Murray who celebrated his day July 20.

There was a lot of summer celebrating at the Fligor household in Edgartown. Doug Fligor, son of Lesley and Andy Fligor, turned 19 on July 16. Coincidently, William Fligor, son of Ann and Brad Fligor, turned 19 on July 17.

Even though it seems that the celebrations would come to an end, it won’t, as Dick Fligor will celebrate his day August 6, and Brad Fligor will celebrate August 8.

It’s that time of the summer again; Jimmy Santos and his wife Patty arrived

Wednesday to stay with Edgartown School classmate Pat Tyra and her husband on Shurtleff Way. As usual, Jimmy is looking forward to the Portuguese Feast and Parade. And once again, the “old” neighborhood gang (from Planting Field Way) of Jimmy, Pat, Eddie Belisle and Tommy Fisher will gather for an intimate dinner with spouses. Unfortunately, they will be missing two of their gang who died before reaching Medicare — David Perry and Johnny Piazza. Do look for Jimmy as he walks around downtown or consider meeting up with him at one of the Tuesday or Friday lunches at The Anchors.

The Imani Winds quintet, now recognized as the leading wind quintet in America, will perform for one night only in Edgartown on Monday, July 23.

You can also attend the open rehearsal at 11 a.m. at the Old Whaling Church. There is free admission for all. It is a fabulous opportunity for students to learn, and not to be missed. The program of music will include Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (arranged for wind instruments), klezmer dances and Poulenc’s glorious sextet for piano and wind quintet. Tickets for the concert are available at the door for $35 ($30 with annual or temporary Island Club card). Students are admitted to concert free.

Bonnie Deitz came by on Tuesday night and said she had a surprise in the car for me. So when I went outside, much to my surprise, Eunice Murray Zelle was in the truck. Eunice, who was staying with the Pellegrinos in Katama, had traveled from her home in Florida to visit Island friends. She was then traveling to Fairhaven to visit her daughter and son, then back on to Florida. It was fun to see her and we will look forward to her coming again next year.

We are happy to have a house guest who will be staying with us until October. Ana Nene Pfälzner arrived at the airport last Wednesday from Berlin.

Nene’s (pronounce as Nina) family was the host family of our neighbor Zack Waller last year, so when Nene wanted to come to the States, they called Zack. The Wallers would have been happy to have Nene, but their house does not have enough room for another person. Seeing we have a spare bedroom, we offered it up to Nene and the rest is history. Nene is 16 and speaks English very well, which is why she wanted to come to the U.S.A., to learn to speak English even better. She will be a guest at our high school for six weeks before she returns to Germany.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
