The gossip columnist is the last to know. What’s going on with my favorite clock, It’s Time to Read, now stuck in the 2:15 position in front of the old Bunch of Grapes building? Will it be moved across the street? Will it be reset in it’s current position? Inquiring minds want to know.
I’m also curious about Café Moxie. It looks finished. The new signs on the window are welcoming. When can we get a meal there?
Last weekend’s Wall Street Journal had a review of the book Island Cup: Two Teams, Twelve Miles of Ocean, and Fifty Years of Football Rivalry, by James Sullivan. As you well know, it’s the Vineyarders against the Whalers; two coaches, Don Herman and Vito Capizzo. In fact, the last time I was on Nantucket was when my son was playing football for the Island Cup. Tony Horwitz did the review. Check it out.
Our American Legion Post 257 wants to thank all of you who made our lobster roll booth at the Tisbury Street Fair a big success. Ed Colligan reminds you we also serve the rolls and chowder on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and everyone is welcome. Don’t forget bingo is still the hot game in town at the Legion on Monday nights.
There are so many guests and relatives in the ’hood, no one can catch up with me for names, I see them all packing their beach chairs and fishing gear and leaving early. I hope I get some reports by next column. There was a Linda Berg sighting last week but I missed her. Hope she returns soon.
Our library has a special children’s program next Tuesday, July 24, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. There will be no 10 a.m. story hour because kids of all ages are welcome to participate in Ellen Allard’s songs, stories, and dancing concert. Don’t miss it.
On Wednesday, July 25, weather permitting, Bruce Riseborough will teach eight-to-11 year-olds how to make bottle rockets — outdoors, of course, at the library. And tomorrow our library holds a free session from 10 a.m. to noon to help you download books on e-reading devices, Sony Reader, Nook, Kindle — you get the idea.
He lives all the way over in Oak Bluffs, but I must mention my special friend and most talented buddy, Doug Peckham, who is opening his home and studio at 56 Pennacook avenue this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a show of his famous mixed-media work; it’s a sale, it’s a party, as only Doug and Barbara know how to do. I’ll see you there. A special thank you to Barbara, who is such a dedicated force in our Island chapter of the League of Women Voters. We need new members. Men are welcome!
On Tuesday, July 24, our Shaw Cramer Gallery on Main street features the mixed-media paintings of Antoinette Noble. Our Island does not lack for talent.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jane Crews, Danielle Jacobs, Gabriela Silva and Corly Ann Miller today. Tomorrow is claimed by Brian Hurley. July 22 shines on Ed Colligan, Katherine Anderson, Jenny Lehman, and Bekki Willems. July 23 is shared by Sapna Bahal and Tyler Burt. July 24 belongs to Librada (Lilly) Garza Clark, Millie Gerber Lockington and Judy Gersh Worthington. July 25 honors Larry Conroy and Tom Colligan, Jr. And on July 26, Amy Hambrecht, Sal Esposito, Doug Liman, Sarah Swift, Kellie Burtch, Rory Elizabeth Mayhew and Martha Chappell take the cake.
