How well I remember sitting up on Farmer Fred Fisher’s wagon with his horses, (Were they May and December?,) pulling the sleigh ride through our town for free holiday rides for the kids. He let my son, Chris Clark, sit up front with him and ring the sleigh bells. Farmer Fred and I argued about everything from politics to feminism to Island characters. But there was one thing we were in total agreement about. That was Debbie Farber. Fred sang the praises of his hardest worker at Nip ‘n’ Tuck Farm. Alas, Farmer Fred is no longer with us although his son, Fred 3rd, carries on wonderfully. Debbie Farber has gone on to run her own farm with her husband. Debbie is featured in the current issue of Cape Cod Life, the 2011 annual guide, on page 113. Read about how a girl who grew up in Queens, N.Y., crossed the sound and took to farming. Nice picture, Debbie!

Congratulations also go out to two of our Island’s young men who came up through the Tisbury School and the high school. Dan Koch and Jason Schwab are on the Dean’s List at New England Tech.

I certainly enjoyed rewatching All the President’s Men last Sunday at the free viewing at our library, continuing with the theme of reporters. It brought the 1970s right back! The library will be closed this Sunday and Monday in honor of Presidents Day weekend. The theme continues at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, with an acclaimed film about CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow. The film focuses on his famous stand against Sen. Joe McCarthy. Betty Burton provides the popcorn. I’ll see you there.

Our library holds its monthly mini-book sale tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This always-successful event helps fund the programs for grown-ups and kids run by the Friends of the Library.

The Great Decisions discussion group continues in the program room on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. The accompanying workbook was developed by the Foreign Policy Association and is available at the front desk. Next Thursday’s topic is the Horn of Africa and how this area became a hotbed for terrorism. All are welcome.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society continues preparation for the annual Academy Awards night by presenting five nominated animated and two short films this weekend. I’ll see you at the Katharine Cornell Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 for the viewing. For more information call 774-392-2972 or visit mvfilmsociety.com.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Charlotte Strople, my favorite bartender Paul Howes, and A.J. Ewart today. Tomorrow is a party for Noreen Bettencourt, Michael James Moore, Chris Paffendorf, Bobby Gordineer and Justin Keough. Feb. 20 honors Warren West, Laura Artru, Ben Davey, and Michael Dowling. Feb. 21 is for Michael Cecilio, James Holenko, Nisa Kontje and Marie Boas. Feb. 22 is claimed by Thomas Dommerich Dunn. And on Feb. 23 David Gardella and Ross MacPherson take the cake. Many happy returns.
