After a slow spring break week, the regional high school teams will get things started up again this Tuesday with home games, meets and matches for softball, girls’ lacrosse, girls’ tennis, and track. The baseball team will play at home on Monday.

Boys’ Tennis

Competing on the home court last Friday, the boys’ team continued its undefeated season with a sweep of EAC member Coyle Cassidy. The team is now 5-0 (3-0 in league play).

At number one singles, senior captain Reid Yennie won his first set 6-1 before falling behind 3-0 in the second set to challenger Kevin Dupont. Not one to go down without a fight, Reid rallied to come back with six points in a row for the victory, keeping the Vineyard individual win streak intact in the process.

In the remaining singles matches, sophomore Kent Leonard (number two) took his win 6-1, 6-2, with number three player sophomore Justice Yennie shutting down 6-0, 6-0.

Both doubles teams (number one Jackson McBridge and Patrick McCarthy, number two Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer) won 6-1, 6-0.

The boys will take on rival Cape Cod Academy next Tuesday in Osterville and play an away match at Bishop Feehan Wednesday.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Vineyarders faced down two very different teams last week, first playing a young Coyle Cassidy Thursday before taking on the challenge of rival Scituate, who was last seen losing to the Vineyard 21-19 in triple overtime during last year’s state tournament.

Twelve different players scored for the Vineyard during the match, with junior Madison Hughes leading the way, with three goals and four assists. Sophomore Alayna Hutchinson followed closely in scoring, putting in three goals and three assists, while juniors Cat Todd and Alex Mark both had three goals and one assist. Coach Betsy Dripps praised the unselfish team play of senior captain Molly Fischer, who had two goals of her own but was more concerned with setting up plays for her teammates. Niki Alexander, Ambika Datta, Angela DeBettencourt, Caroline Fournier, Jenny Hart, Taylor Poggi and Isabel Smith had one goal each. The Vineyarders came away with a 21-4 win.

The Scituate game, to nobody’s surprise, was a battle from the start. The Sailors notched the first goal less than two minutes into the game, which was quickly answered by an Alex Mark score; sophomore Taylor Poggi then set the girls ahead on an assist from Alayna Hutchinson. The Vineyarders kept up the back-and-forth for a time, but Scituate took off on a four-goal scoring spree, creating a hole from which the team could not fully recover.

Defenders Niki Alexander, Angela DeBettencourt, Shelby Ferry, Isabel Smith and Hannah Moore worked to contain Scituate in the second half, while the Vineyard offense doubled its first-half score to end with eight goals total. Scituate, however, proved well-versed in breaking from the draw and forcing turnovers, and ran away with the win 18-8 (the Vineyarders will next play Scituate in May at home).

The girls will play Bishop Feehan at home next Tuesday at 3 p.m., and will take on Cohasset in an away game the next day.

Sailing

The Vineyard sailors took to the waters off Osterville last Saturday for the annual O’Day Qualifier hosted by Cape Cod Academy. Qualifying regattas took place throughout New England, with the top three from each site moving on to competition at the national level.

Despite a particularly grueling day on the water, with shifty 15-20 knot winds out of the northeast and overcast skies, the team worked its way into fourth place at one point before finishing seventh of 12 at the end of the regatta.

Unlike most of the team’s other regattas this season, the O’Day featured fleet racing (with its greater emphasis on individual boats) as opposed to standard three-on-three team racing. Competing in the A division for the Vineyard were senior captain and skipper Ben Nivala and sophomore crew Tyler Shapiro, who placed fourth in their division with 39 points (Tabor Academy placed first with 12 points). Ben and Tyler sailed the entire day (from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with no change of crew, in a performance receiving high praise from coach Andrew Burr.

“It’s not often you see that kind of progress in that kind of boat,” he said, noting that Ben has only been skippering for two years.

Starting off the B division races for the Vineyard were junior skipper Jesse Thomas and sophomore crew Katie Johnson. Senior Cole Bilodeau took over crew duties for races three through six. During the final two races of the day, sophomore skipper James Ulyatt and junior crew Jake Sudarsky represented the Vineyard. The B division racers placed seventh in their group, with a total of 56 points.
