Virginia A. (Gini) Smith Grey died on Saturday, April 23, with her family by her side at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J. She was 90.

Gini was born in South Orange, N.J., the daughter of Henry O. and Ysabel (Roso) Allen. She graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange in 1938. Gini worked for Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company for 37 years and retired as the valuation manager of the Actuarial Department in 1984.

Gini was first introduced to the Vineyard in the 1940s by her husband of 44 years, Frederick Luce Smith (who died in 1987), whose family trace their Vineyard roots back to the mid-1600s. Summer vacations were spent at the Vineyard and upon her retirement, Gini spent every summer at the beach cottage on East Chop where she loved to swim, garden and bird watch. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed playing with the clubs in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. Gini was a member of the East Chop Association and attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Oak Bluffs.

Gini is survived by her husband, George W. Grey, of Cedar Grove, N.J.; daughter, Abigail Lehner, and her husband, Paul, of Herndon, Va., and Oak Bluffs; son, Stephen Smith, and his wife, Valerie, of Alpha, N.J.; and daughter, Wendy Lally, and her husband, Robert, of Bethlehem, Pa. Gini is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Mark, Garrett, Jennifer, Evan, Ryan, Grant, Brandon and Frederick.

A memorial service is scheduled for May 14 at the Church of the Holy Innocents in West Orange, N.J.
