A new restaurant on South Water street was granted a seasonal beer and wine license by Edgartown selectmen on Monday, but a one-day license for clothing store Jack Wills was denied.
Greenhouse restaurant applicants Pat and Ted Courtney said they intend to run a family dining restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating out of a converted greenhouse behind the Capt. Obediah and Capt. Convery houses. The selectmen approved the license unanimously and wished the brothers good luck.
Greenhouse also faces noise concerns from its neighbors, the Harborside Inn, Charlotte Inn and Victorian Inn.
“I feel [Greenhouse restaurant] was hastily conceived,” Victorian Inn manager Steven Caliri told the selectmen, adding that he believed it met criteria to be referred to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.
“I don’t think there’s going to be any noise back there,” Mr. Courtney said. “People are going to enjoy it, and inns will ultimately benefit from it.”
Selectmen unanimously denied the license application from Jack Wills, citing underage drinking as a possible risk.
“It’s a bad precedent to set,” selectman Margaret Serpa said.
“We should do it on a case-by-case basis,” selectman Mr. Donaroma said. “In some ... cases it’s not policed and people are not trained properly who to give the wine to. It could be trouble.”
