An earthquake centered in Virginia Tuesday afternoon was felt hundreds of miles away, including on the Vineyard. The 5.8 magnitude earthquake was felt strongly in Washington, D.C. and up the East Coast. On the Vineyard, the county communications center received a handful of calls reporting shakes, including one from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, according Linda Cook, a spokesman for the communications center and a lieutenant for the county sheriff’s department.
Martha Kane, a dispatcher for the center based at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, said she felt it herself in the building. One resident of Peaked Hill who called said his whole house shook. Aquinnah police chief Randhi Belain felt the quake in his cruiser and called in.
The quake occurred at 1:51 p.m. President Obama, who is vacationing on the Vineyard, issued a statement just before 3 p.m. through his deputy press secretary Josh Earnest. “The President was told that there are no initial reports of major infrastructure damage, including at airports and nuclear facilities and that there were currently no requests for assistance,” Mr. Earnest said.
