Thank you in advance for helping to make a difference for some American heroes. Katie Tamoshunas Carroll noted that being able to “donate just a little bit of my time during the last two years has been a remarkable experience.” She is looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends during this year’s event.
Cynthia Akins and her daughter, Thea, returned to their homes in Utah and Washington respectively after spending their annual visit at their Aquinnah home. They enjoyed many activities while here including the fair, the discussions at the Aquinnah Cultural Center and family gatherings.
Congratulations and all the best to Nicholas Bologna and Susan Anderson on their recent engagement. Love is definitely in the Aquinnah air.
Congratulations and all the best to Fred Croft and Sarah Saltonstall who were married in the middle of the channel next to the buoy between Aquinnah and Chilmark aboard the bike ferry of which Fred is the captain. The ceremony was performed by Merrily Fenner and witnessed by Capt. Hugh Taylor and his wife, Jeanne, longtime friends of the celebrants.
Reminder: Jean Entine’s daughter Sarah will have her film aired on Monday, Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. on public television. Sarah is the producer and director of the film that chronicles three generations of women in one family dealing with various learning disabilities (now called learning differences). The featured family is her own.
Condolences to the family and friends of Catherine Rezendes Ferreira who died at the California home of her son Brent and his wife Claire. She is also survived by her sons Brian and Frederick, her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of Antone Rezendes of West Tisbury. I have many fond memories of gathering with the Ferreira family on Sunday afternoons.
Condolences to the family and friends of Roger Gibson who died on Saturday at his home in Dartmouth following a long illness. Roger was a dear friend and a fellow schoolmate at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Services will be held in Fairhaven today.
Condolences to the family and friends of Jerome Buddy Healy who died a week ago at Massachsuetts General Hospital.
Michael and Eleanor Hebert entertained 60 of their closest friends on a tour of the Vineyard on Sunday. Their longtime travel group from Boston arrived Sunday morning, toured down Island with yours truly, had a wonderful luncheon at the Square Rigger thanks to Tony and Doreen Rezendes and their family, then it was off to the pow-wow in Aquinnah Circle. They all enjoyed themselves immensely and look forward to their next adventure.
Family and friends of Michelle Laurie gathered at the Aquinnah town hall on Saturday afternoon to bid her the fondest farewell in the community that she loved. Her family and friends arrived from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Colorado, Florida, Honduras, and every point in between. Her neurologist from Massachusuetts General Hospital attended the service with his wife and their four children. Michelle died at Massachusetts General Hospital in June and her memorial service was held at Philbin Beach. A potluck dinner was served and there were many fond memories to be shared. Her family shared a video of Michelle over the years, from infancy to her adult years. We learned that she was student of the year in ninth grade, and she was one of 20 students in Canada to go to the Ottawa Parliament. Even as a young student, she was always protecting others from bullies. She had an amazing love of animals with names for each and every one. And we learned of her amazing work at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Michelle is survived by her husband, Phil Robinson, her parents, Ian and Shirley of Calgary, and her brother Steve and his family as well as hundreds of friends.
Congratulations and all the best to Chelsea Ives and Sean Kelley who were married on Sept. 10 along the shores of the Chilmark Pond at Allen Farm. Chelsea is the daughter of Peter and Clare Ives of Old South Road.
Judy Lane returned to her home in western Massachusetts following the memorial service for Michelle Laurie.
Judith Manning Milavsky returned to her home in Toronto on Sunday evening after spending a long weekend visiting with family and friends, meeting and spending time with the younger generations of nieces and nephews, antiquing and shopping for jewels, attending the powwow as well as the memorial service for Michelle Laurie. Needless to say, she returned home to rest after such a busy weekend. It was her first visit home in three and a half years.
Condolences to the family and friends of Ruth Moore who died on Sunday at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. It was a pleasure to reunite recently with Ruth and her sister Bernice at a tribal elders luncheon at White’s in Westport but especially to reunite them with their cousin Pauline whom they had not seen in 41 years — all members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Ruth is survived by her son Vernon, her sister Bernice, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and by many cousins. Services were held in New Bedford on Thursday.
Condolences to the family and friends of Adelburt Buddy Thurber who died recently at the Falmouth Hospital.
