Edgartown selectmen voted Monday to allow several old trees to be taken down and replaced with new specimens.
Four aging sycamore maples will be removed from the former Henry Beetle Hough property at 9 Pierce Lane, now owned by John and Amanda Waldron. According to Robbie Hutchison, who works for Donaroma’s Nursery and acts as a landscaping agent for the Waldrons, the sycamores were crowding out other trees on the property and growing into electrical wires. They were also covered with ivy. “It would just be healthier all around,” Ms. Hutchison said during a public hearing on the tree removal.
Red maples will be planted to replace the sycamores. “We’re not just arbitrarily taking the sycamores out,” said Ms. Hutchison. “It’s really a crowding issue. It’s like taking your wisdom teeth out so the rest have room.”
Selectman Michael Donaroma, who owns Donaroma’s nursery, recused himself during the vote.
Bob Clay will also be allowed to take down three to four large pitch pines on the Chappaquiddick Road. The selectmen asked Mr. Clay to work with tree warden Stuart Fuller to decide which trees to remove and how to replace them.
The existing trees provide screening on one side of the Chappy fire station, which abuts Mr. Clay’s property. The selectmen asked Mr. Fuller to help Mr. Clay decide how best to maintain the screening with replacement trees.
In other business, selectmen appointed Louis Paciello as the Edgartown representative to the Vineyard Transit Authority.
The board also granted Mr. Fuller, who is also the Edgartown highway superintendent, permission to overdraw the town snow budget account if necessary, in preparation for a possible snowstorm this weekend.
