Jean Anthony Skubel died suddenly on Jan. 9, 2010, in Bonita Springs, Fla., at the age of 81. She had been a part-time Edgartown resident since buying a home with her husband there in 1980.

Mrs. Skubel was born August 15, 1928, in Adams, the daughter of the late Merton and Doris (Gould) Anthony. She was proud to be related to the women’s rights leader Susan B. Anthony. Mrs. Skubel graduated from Adams High School and received a diploma from Becker Junior College (now Becker College), in Worcester in 1947. After college she returned to Adams and worked in the personnel department of the General Electric Company.

She was married to Chester Skubel on July 7, 1951. Following the birth of her two children, Mrs. Skubel was a housewife and active in church affairs. She served on the board of the Slingerlands Methodist Church, among other volunteer activities for the church in Slingerlands, N.Y., a town near the Albany suburb of Delmar, where the family lived from 1963 to 1990.

In 1971, Mrs. Skubel returned to the workforce, becoming secretary to the superintendent of schools in Bethlehem, N.Y. She was extremely proud of the school district and her work for the superintendent, and was a loyal, hardworking and dedicated employee in this position, which was particularly notable as she had been out of the workforce for nearly 20 years before taking this position.

In 1990 Mrs. Skubel and her husband retired and subsequently moved from the Albany area to the Vineyard. They loved the Island and also became winter residents of Bonita Springs, beginning in 1994.

Shortly thereafter her husband was stricken with Parkinson’s disease. Throughout his struggle with the disease, Mrs. Skubel was his sole day-to-day caretaker, and in the last several years when he required assistance in virtually all of life’s activities, she provided his care around the clock, without question or complaint.

She was a member of the congregations of both the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs and the Federated Church of Edgartown. She was a member of the PEO sisterhood. She was also a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, watching their games daily during the season.

In addition to her late husband, Chester, who died in 2006, she was predeceased by her sister Carol, and leaves her son Stephen, of Washington, D.C., his former wife, Marimichael, and their children, John, 25, and Cara, 23; her son Stewart, of Alexandria, Va., and his wife, Teresa, and their children, Alexander, 20, and Anna, 16; her stepmother, Doris, of North Adams; as well as nieces and nephews and a host of good and loyal friends.

A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, Fla., on Feb. 27.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jerry Fritz, pastor of the Federated Church, at the Edgartown Cemetery on Saturday, April 3, at 2 p.m., and the family would welcome the presence of her neighbors and friends, both at the service and at the home immediately afterwards. Memorial contributions can be made to the Federated Church, 45 South Summer street or P.O. Box 249, Edgartown, MA 02539 for use in the organ restoration fund or for the minister’s discretionary fund, which assists persons in need.
