An Oak Bluffs business owner was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault and battery last week following a four-day jury trial in Edgartown district court.
Saurabh Chhibber, 29, was sentenced to two and a half years in state prison. He is the owner of Island Authentic, a T-shirt and souvenir shop on Circuit avenue.
Judge Lance Garth presided over the trial and sentencing, which includes probation for life following Mr. Chhibber’s release from prison. He was also ordered to stay away from the victim and undergo random drug and alcohol testing.
Mr. Chhibber, a native of India, was arrested last August on charges of rape and indecent assault and battery after a young woman told Oak Bluffs police that he attacked her when they were walking in an isolated spot near Central avenue.
Judge Garth later amended the rape charge to a second count of indecent assault and battery.
According to court records, the victim knew Mr. Chhibber and met him at a local bar early in the evening on the night of the incident.
At trial, Cape and Islands assistant district attorney Laura Marshard called a number of witnesses who supported the victim’s account of what happened the evening of the attack.
